Port Elgin
The shining waters of Lake Huron and its sandy beaches are an attractive backdrop to the more practical aspects of day-to-day living: schools, health care, municipal services, recreational activities and programs, safe neighbourhoods, shopping and, of course, an affordable lifestyle! With a population of over 7,000, Port Elgin is the largest town in Bruce County and is now a part of the larger Town of Saugeen Shores which takes in Southampton and Saugeen Township. Port Elgin has a bustling main street with a great variety of shops, boutiques, larger stores and restaurants. The Port Elgin bonus is a superb white sand beach and harbour just five blocks west of "downtown" on warm, blue Lake Huron. Here you will find landscaped boardwalks, regular flea markets, bandshell concerts, fishing charter boats and a great swimming beach for all ages. FYIOriginally incorporated in 1874, Port Elgin was named after the Governor General of Canada (1846 - 1854), James Bruce, the 8th Earl of Elgin and Kincardine. One of the town's founding fathers, Sam Bricker, is credited with having Port Elgin's streets planted with sugar maples -- a beautiful sight in autumn. Special annual events include the world renowned Pumpkinfest the first Saturday in October, and the Canadian Big Band Celebration in September. The Saugeen Rail Trail provides walkers and cyclists with a gentle trail between Port Elgin and Southampton, while nearby, at MacGregor Point Provincial Park, visitors can stroll on the fen boardwalk, take a guided hike along the Huron fringe or enjoy the other park facilities.
